o   Harvesting Oranges

Growing Oranges is easy and a very rewarding pastime. Firstly you need to purchase an orange variety adapted to your area. For example, navels grow well in NSW, while Valencia oranges are adapted to Victoria. Plant the tree in a warm, sunny area where the soil drains well.

The watering of oranges should be done first thing in the morning before sunrise and mulch to conserve water. Water the tree deeply once every 7 to 10 days in midsummer. Water less often if it rains or if the weather is cool. Fertilise every four to six weeks from August to February. Protect trees from frost if temperatures are forecast to drop below 10 degrees centigrade.

Harvest your Navel oranges when they are a golden colour. Valencia oranges are ripe when they just start to turn orange in colour but will always have a little green on them.
